Portable Gimp

What is this?

Portable Gimp places the Gimp(GNU Image Manipulion Program) with its configuration files in a folder to utilize it without installation in the Puppy space(pupsave).

The Gimp is a large application. The Gimp makes large cash and saves new brushes and patterns consuming your pupsave.

The Portable Gimp has the Gimp code as a sfs, and mounts the sfs and launch. The sfs is unmounted at the application finished so that the loop back devices to be free. The Portable Gimp also holds the Gimp settings, cache and additionals in the same 'gimp-portable' folder, not to consume your pupsave.

Tested on Precise-571JP and on TahaPup 6.0.5 CE. Works on Precise Puppy and TahrPup.

How to use?

I. Installation

Extract gimp-portable-*.tar.gz at somewhere under /mnt/home, or under some mounted point like /mnt/sdb1. No mater the file system of the partion, ext2/3/4, f2fs(if the kernel can handle), ntfs or vfat. You can remove the archive *.tar.gz after extracting. A folder 'gimp-portable-*' is made. You can move this folder anywhere under /mnt, and you can also change the folder name. '/mnt/home/apps/gimp-portable' for example.

The gimp-portable-* folder works as a ROX application. It is seen as the gimp app icon icon. Unfortunately it does not work as a ROX applicition on NTFS file system. The icon shows normal folder folder icon in this case.

II. Launching Gimp

Click gimp-portable-* folder if the icon shows the gimp app icon. Or, open the folder and click the executable shell script icon gimp-portable. The Gimp launches.

You can drag and drop an image file on the gimp-portable-* folder or on the executable to edit the image by the Gimp.

III. Making the desktop icon (optional)

You can make the desktop icon if the gimp-portable folder is under /mnt/home. Drag and drop the gimp-portable-* folder or the executable on the desktop.

IV. Ragistoration on the Puppy menu (optional)

You can register the gimp-portable on the Puppy menu. Right click the gimp-portable and select 'Register Gimp on the Puppy menu'. Or, open the folder and click the executable 'Register'.

You need registor again if you moved the gimp-portable folder or changed the name of the folder after the first registoration.

If you register the gimp-portable on the Puppy menu, the Gimp(portable) appears on the Puppy menu. If another Gimp was installed, it shows in the menu in parallel. The gimp-portable is also registered as the default paint. Right clicking an image file on ROX-Filer apears a menu with Gimp-portable as an option. To launch the gimp-portable from a virtual terminal, type 'gimp-portable'.

V. Uninstallation

The gimp-portable is registered on the Puppy Package Manager if you made the registoration. You can uninstall it from the PPM and then the Gimp(portable) is removed from the Puppy menu, but the Gimp in the gimp-portable folder is still there.

You can remove the gimp-portable folder with the installed Gimp. But the menu entry is stil in the Puppy menu. You need to uninstall the gimp-portable using PPM to remove it from the Puppy menu.

VI. The configuration files

The configuration files of the Gimp is in the folder gimp-data in the gimp-portable folder. You can place additional brushes, pattern, and etc. in the proper folder under the gimp-data.
